Synopsis

The O.C. opens when Ryan Atwood, a teenager with a rocky past, gets an unexpected lifeline after crossing paths with public defender Sandy Cohen. Sandy and his wife Kirsten bring Ryan into their home in Newport Beach, where privilege comes with strict social rules and long memories. Ryan tries to keep his head down, but his presence quickly ripples through the community, drawing attention from classmates, parents, and neighbors who question why he belongs. Inside the Cohen house, Ryan forms a close bond with Seth, Sandy and Kirsten’s sarcastic, lonely son, and together they stumble through high school politics and sudden popularity. As Ryan connects with the girl next door, Marissa, and Seth rekindles his longtime crush on Summer, relationships deepen and shift under pressure. With rivalries, family strains, and hidden motives all around, the show tracks how a new family is built, tested, and defended in a world that doesn’t easily welcome outsiders.
